Housing

Emperor scorpions are fairly easily housed.  Since these scorpions come from rain forests, they need to be kept very hot and humid. A temperature range from 80-95 F and a humidity level of around 80% is a must if you want you emperor to remain healthy.  The heat can be provided by using a red heat bulb or a ceramic heat emitter.  I prefer ceramic heat emitters due to the fact that they do not create any light. Scorpions hate light. Whether it be from the sun or a bulb; they cannot see red light, however.  Some people like to use under tank heaters. I do not recommend these as I think they are worthless. Mine did not raise the ambient temperature more than 2 F. Daily misting will keep the humidity up. You should invest in a thermometer and a humidity gauge in order to keep the living conditions optimal.

Emperor scorpions also like to dig and create burrows. At least 4 inches of substrate should be provided to ensure your scorpions stay stress free.  There are many different opinions about which is the best substrate. I personally think plain old peat moss is the best, as it is soft, holds water fairly well, and resistant to mold and fungi which can propagate in warm moist environments quite quickly.  Other people prefer straight vermiculite.  What you use is mostly a personal preference.  No matter what you use, DON’T use cedar chips as they have been known to kill arachnids. Emperors don’t seem to like bark chips much either, as they do not allow for digging and burrowing.

Some kind of hiding place must also be present in the cage.  Whether it be a expensive log from the pet store or a broken flower pot, they will get stressed and die if some kind of retreat is not provided.

A fairly wide water dish must also be present at all times.  Although you won’t see your scorpion drink much, they will occasionally get thirsty.  A water dish will also help you keep up the humidity in the cage.

Emperor scorpions live quite well in groups. If you plan to house your emperors communally, make sure you feed all of them well before introducing them into the same cage. Hungry emperor scorpions have been known to eat each other.  Make sure the scorpions have enough space and more hiding places than there are scorpions. Males are sometimes more prone to start fights, so it is usually wise to have more females than males.
